It’s an excellent way to transform slightly stale bread into a special breakfast, and the entire recipe can be ready in less than half an hour.

Ingredients

  • 8 thick slices of brioche, challah, or rustic white bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) heavy cream, optional
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp butter, plus more as needed for cooking

For Serving

  • Maple syrup
  • Fresh strawberries
  • Blueberries or raspberries
  • Powdered sugar
  • Butter
  • Sliced bananas, optional

Instructions

Choose the bread

Slightly stale, thickly sliced bread works particularly well for French toast because it absorbs the custard without falling apart.

Brioche produces a rich, tender result, while challah and sturdy rustic bread are also excellent options.

Prepare the custard

Crack the eggs into a wide, shallow bowl.

Add the milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and a small pinch of salt.

Whisk thoroughly until the eggs are completely incorporated.

Soak the bread

Place a slice of bread into the custard and allow it to absorb some of the mixture.

Turn it over and coat the opposite side.

The bread should absorb enough custard to become flavorful without getting so saturated that it falls apart.

Repeat with the remaining slices.

Cook until golden

Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.

Melt a little butter across the cooking surface.

Add the soaked bread without overcrowding the skillet.

Cook for approximately 2–4 minutes per side, until deeply golden brown and cooked through in the center.

Add additional butter between batches when necessary.

Keep it warm

If you’re preparing several batches, place the finished slices on a baking sheet in a low oven while cooking the remaining French toast.

This allows everyone to enjoy their breakfast warm at the same time.

Serve

Serve immediately with a drizzle of maple syrup and a little butter.

Add fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or bananas and finish with a light dusting of powdered sugar.

Tips for Perfect French Toast

Use thick bread. Thin sandwich bread can become soggy very quickly.

Slightly stale is better. Day-old bread generally absorbs the custard while maintaining its structure.

Don’t use excessive heat. Medium heat gives the custard inside enough time to cook before the outside becomes too dark.

Don’t soak too long. A quick but thorough dip is usually enough, especially with softer breads such as brioche.

Traditional Variations

For a warmer flavor, add a small pinch of nutmeg alongside the cinnamon.

Orange or lemon zest can give the custard a subtle citrus aroma.

You can also leave out the cinnamon and emphasize vanilla for a simpler version.

For an especially rich weekend breakfast, use brioche with whole milk and cream.

What to Serve With French Toast

Fresh berries are a natural match, but French toast also works beautifully with sliced bananas, sautéed apples, peaches, yogurt, or fruit compote.

For a larger traditional breakfast, serve it alongside eggs, fresh fruit, and coffee or tea.

Storage and Reheating

Store leftover French toast in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Reheat it in a skillet or toaster for the best texture.

French toast can also be frozen. Separate the slices with parchment paper and freeze them in a freezer-safe container.

Final Note

Golden and lightly crisp outside with a warm, custardy center, Classic French Toast turns a handful of everyday ingredients into a breakfast that feels special.

Add berries, maple syrup, and a dusting of powdered sugar, and you have a timeless breakfast that’s just as good for an ordinary morning as it is for a relaxed weekend brunch. 🍞🍓
