Ingredients
- 12 lasagna noodles
- 500 g (1 lb) ground beef or ground turkey
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 800 g (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 250 g ricotta cheese
- 300 g shredded mozzarella
- 100 g grated Parmesan
- 1 egg
- Fresh basil or parsley
- 1 tbsp olive oil
Cook the pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles until al dente according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
Prepare the meat sauce: Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Add the onion and cook for 3–4 minutes. Add garlic and cook for another minute.
Add the ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 15–20 minutes.
Make the cheese filling: Combine ricotta, egg, half the Parmesan, and a pinch of salt in a bowl.
Assemble: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Spread a thin layer of meat sauce over the bottom of a baking dish. Add noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella. Repeat the layers, finishing with mozzarella and Parmesan.
Bake: Cover with foil and bake for approximately 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, golden, and bubbling.
Rest: Allow the lasagna to rest for about 10 minutes before cutting. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley and serve.
Tip: Make the meat sauce a day ahead and refrigerate it—the extra resting time can deepen the flavor.
